I am Edwina West-Dukes and I bring you greetings from Sunrise McMillian Elementary School, home of the Jaguars. Since 2006, I have been privileged to serve both teachers and students at Sunrise in the capacity of literacy coach.  My goal as literacy coach is to empower students with the opportunity to be successful readers. This success is developed through differentiated instruction and endless exposure to a variety of literacy strategies and genres. While many have perished from the lack of knowledge, Sunrise McMillan students flourish from the abundance of knowledge deposited in them. Our campus is on “The RISE” to exemplary and I am excited to be a part of the winning team.

 What is Coaching?

Great coaches are great sensors. They understand what makes the person excel, what their natural aptitudes are and what needs to be taught.  They understand that they must motivate people with high natural ability in order to get high performance.

My Responsibilities as a Literacy Coach

I work interactively with teachers, students, administration, parents, and others to develop, implement and monitor rigorous literacy practices.  My responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

·         Modeling  lessons

·         Target teaching

·         Assisting  teachers in establishing  effective literacy-rich classrooms 

·         Assisting  teachers in the organization/management of literacy strategies, lesson planning, classroom management practices and monitoring student progress

·         Development and Implementation of Classroom Interventions

·         Conducting On-campus professional development for Literacy Teachers

·         Providing assistance in navigation and usage of curriculum frameworks for lesson planning

·         Analyzing Data to drive instruction that is effective and differentiated
