Your Best Shot: Immunizations Required For School

Attention Parents:

Students entering kindergarten in August must have received certain immunizations for the 2012-2013 school year.  Students in other grades must also have up-to-date immunizations to begin school.

Families should have received written notice from the school nurse if, according to our records, your child still needs shots.  This year, there is a major change in where you can go to receive these immunizations.

Effective January 1, 2012, children who are covered by private, commercial insurance which covers vaccines are no longer eligible for the TVFC Program (Texas Vaccines for Children Program).

This means that those children who are covered by such insurance will have to get their state required vaccines through their physician and not the public health department clinic. Under the previous policy, no child was denied a vaccine at a public health department clinic.

Tarrant County Public Health Clinics (TCPH) will only immunize students who:

  • Have Medicaid and Chip
  • Do not have insurance
  • Have insurance that does not cover vaccines
  • Are underinsured under the TVFC guidelines

>> See clinic details.

“There are no changes to the rules requiring certain vaccines nor are there any changes to the vaccines required to attend school,” said Alice Turner-Jackson, the District’s director of Health Services. “The only thing that has changed is where you will get those vaccines.”

Remember, your child will not be able to enroll or begin school on the first day without the required immunizations.  Make sure you bring the updated shot record to school to avoid any delay in registering for the new school year.
