The Fort Worth ISD, in conjunction with the Steer Fort Worth Education Task Force, Fit Worth and the City of Fort Worth, has developed this program aimed at tackling youth nutrition issues – Food For Thought.
Studies have shown that proper nutrition, combined with physical activity, has a dramatic impact on student behavior, performance and classroom achievement.
Students will taste foods that will be on the new Food for Thought Fort Worth school lunch menu beginning early next year. Student tasters will be acting as food critics and giving immediate feedback to Chef Lisa and other Food for Thought Fort Worth volunteers on the new menu items. Customer feedback will be collected and recipes and/or menu items will be adjusted accordingly.
The Food for Thought program is a partnership between the City of Fort Worth and Fort Worth ISD. The pilot program will launch at De Zavala Elementary this school year. Nutrition education for students and parents will be ongoing throughout the pilot. A new school menu will be introduced in January, 2013. Key measurements before, during and after the pilot will be used to judge program effectiveness.
